Weekend at Cottage, Part 2: Loon Island.
Across from the cottage sits Loon Island. This wee island is a federally protected loon sanctuary, which is why I feel so at home there. Having this sanctuary on the lake makes for plenty of loon calls, and the sneaking suspicion that a Heritage moment camera crew is hiding in the bushes.
We struck out on Saturday morning for a visit, dragging our canoe up to the wee beach, the same beach on which, last autumn, we discovered how difficult it was to construct a durable inookshook. Loon sanctuary also = significant loon crap deposits, requiring some careful stepping on certain parts of the island. ![](//photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5460/1240/320/IMG_2846.jpg)
A great little island, lucky loons; it feels like it is made entirely out of pine needles, the ground is that soft. No nests remained, but there was a loon hideout made from branches and the roots of an overturned tree. While we were checking stuff out, we heard, then saw, this boat go by, bow so far in the air it became a caricature of what a really fast boat should look like. Actual speeds never approached double digits, it seemed, given the amount of time taken to finally pass the island. ![](//photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5460/1240/320/IMG_2840.jpg)
To be continued......
